From the Director of Boarding
The end of Term 2 is nigh, and it is clear to me that our boarders have done their best to squeeze everything out of this term that they can. It is pleasing to know that the boys are making the most of the opportunities presented to them whilst they are here at Grammar. I know that many boys are looking forward to getting home and having a good rest with a few extra hours in bed. They have all earned it.
Looking back at the past two weeks, our boarders activity program has had its two biggest events this term. Our Boarders Festival for National Boarding Week saw over 600 boarders from the Toowoomba region descend upon TGS to spend a few hours socialising with other boarders. There was a wonderful atmosphere to the day and I am confident that this event will only get bigger in the years' to come. In particular, I’d like to thank the Interact Club boys for their selfless efforts in manning the sno-cone stall.
Last weekend was our trip to Movie World on the Gold Coast. We had great weather on the day and the 60 boarders who attended had a great time. The speed of the rollercoasters was amazing and I’m impressed with the bravery of the boys who went on some of those rollercoasters multiple times. There will be some vivid descriptions shared with friends and family, I am sure.
At TGS, we are at arguably one of the busiest times of the year. Many boarders are doing their best to juggle their academics, finishing off assignments or studying for end of semester tests. In addition to this, some of our boarders are playing both football and rugby trials on Saturdays' as well as training for both sports. Our boarding staff are doing their best to help them stay organised and in control of all they have to do.
This week was also the final ‘Duty Week Dinner’ night of Term 2. This initiative has been going from Week 2 and means that the boarding house that is on duty for the week gets to choose the Wednesday night dinner and dessert. The seniors in the house are then given 5 minutes to run an activity to engage all of the boarders. There have been some great meals and plenty of fun had in these activities. It will be something that returns in Term 3 and will be eagerly anticipated by all of our boarders.
Next Wednesday will be a pizza night for the State of Origin which is always a great night. The afternoon will feature the ‘traditional’ House of Origin touch games which can be more fiercely contested than what is televised!
In looking ahead to the end of term, I will ask that parents begin to enter all of their end of term leave requests as soon as they are able to. I will write separately to all families with specific details about the final days of term. As we have a GPS fixture against Brisbane Boys College on the Friday, it is important that all boarders selected in teams that have games, are available to play. I have organised staff to supervise boarders on the Friday night if they need to stay in boarding that night. As a GPS School, we are committed to playing these games.
I hope all of our boarding families are able to enjoy the final two weeks of Term 2 and then have a wonderful few weeks with their sons at home on holidays.
