This week was significant for our senior boarders. The symbolic transition of leadership saw our Year 11 boarders move across the dining hall to take their place at the senior table, acknowledging and thanking the Year 12s for their guidance throughout the year. The Year 12s were met with thunderous applause from the other boarders, and a special mention must go to Rupeni Baravilava for leading a heartfelt rendition of Country Road, which added a memorable musical touch to the occasion. I am confident that this event will continue to grow and develop in future years.
Following on from this lunchtime event, the whole School gathered for the Year 12 Awards Presentation Assembly - a moment to honour the achievements of our graduating class. The traditional tunnel of boys leading to the School House lawn was a powerful send-off for our Year 12s as they concluded their timetabled lessons.
In other recent events, I was also delighted to spend my Monday night at the Take Note Concert and Performing Arts Awards. There were plenty of boarders performing on the night, playing a range of instruments, singing and contributing to the array of ensembles and choral groups that performed on the night.

Our Term 4 Boarding Program is well underway and I’m pleased to see how our boarders are making the most of our weekend activities. As we plan for the remainder of the term, I’d like to remind all boarders to sign up for activities in advance. This helps us use our resources effectively and ensures everyone has access to a wide range of activities. While I wish to continue to offer popular trips - including our end-of-year visits to the Gold Coast theme parks, I would also like to ensure that these are not at the expense of more local activities, balancing our offerings and make the most of what’s available nearby.
In looking ahead to the remainder of the term, I know our boarding leaders want to finish the term well. Ensuring that they are leading a boarding program in which all boarders feel connected to their house and the School. Next Wednesday the House Captains will be coordinating a leadership workshop for their peers, developing their goals for 2026.
Nick Byron Director of Boarding
Introducting our New BPSG President
Ben Lawrie - Incoming President, Boarder Parents’ Support Group
Ben Lawrie is a proud Old Boy and boarded at TGS
A proud Old Boy of Toowoomba Grammar School (1988–92), Ben Lawrie was born and raised in regional Queensland, attending Westwood State School and Toowoomba Prep (now TAS) before continuing his education at TGS.
After completing a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) at CQ University, Ben worked across Central Queensland on farms before qualifying as a Chartered Accountant. His career took him from Becker & Co and Evans Edwards Chartered Accountants to Melbourne, before returning to his family property ‘Evergreen’ near Westwood. They run a breeder-grower cattle operation.
Boarding has long been part of Ben and his wife Eliza’s lives, both having boarded in Toowoomba themselves. Today, they continue that legacy with their three children - Claudia (Year 11), Rupert (Year 9) and Alexandra (Year 7) - all proud boarding students with Rupert here and their girls at Fairholme College.
Ben is deeply committed to supporting the wellbeing, growth and direction of the boarding community. He believes boarding teaches boys to connect with all kinds of people, to develop resilience and to make the best of what they’ve got; fostering a quiet confidence and belief in themselves.
As incoming President of the Boarder Parents’ Support Group, Ben looks forward to helping the greater boarding community and its staff with the ultimate aim of seeing every boy become the best version of himself.

The weather and the term are heating up in equal measure, with the Term 4 sprint already well underway.
Before reviewing the opening few weeks, it would be remiss of me not to mention our House Formal Dinner. The evening was an enormous success and I hugely appreciated the efforts of all those in attendance to make the event so special. Our inaugural House Captain’s Raffle raised a very healthy $1320 and serves to further demonstrate the strength of the Boyce community as we rallied behind the Farm (Drought) Angels cause. I also enjoyed hearing the reflections of our guests, Connor, Pat and Matt as they shared their memories of Boyce House with interviewer, Tom T. As our Year 12s near the end of their Boyce journey, I look forward to welcoming them back in years to come to do the same.
Archie Beckwith - Boyce Boarding House Captain, 2025
In this vein, thank you to Archie for both his leadership of Boyce House and for his final reflection below on the impact boarding at TGS has had on him:
As my time as a TGS boarder draws to an end, I’ve found myself reflecting on the years that have shaped me, not just as a student, but as a person. Boarding life has been more than early mornings and late nights; it’s been about community, resilience and growth. Living alongside your mates every day teaches you more than any textbook could, how to lead with empathy, handle challenges and appreciate the strength that comes from genuine connection.
What stands out most, however, is the sense of community that grows out of both our routines and our co-curricular involvement. Boarding teaches us resilience and responsibility, but it also builds friendships that will last long after we leave these gates. I am proud to lead a house where boys support each other, where effort is valued as much as achievement, and where every one of us contributes to something bigger than ourselves. These experiences have grounded me, teaching me responsibility and humility, but also reminding me of the value of kindness and consistency.
Being House Captain has been an incredible privilege. It’s shown me that leadership isn’t about titles or authority, but about listening, serving and setting an example, even when no one’s watching. The lessons I’ve learnt here will stay with me long after I leave the gates, lessons about respect, accountability and the importance of community.
To the younger boarders: embrace every challenge, look out for one another and make the most of every opportunity. The days might feel long, but the years will fly by and you’ll soon realise just how much these walls have taught you.
Next, we hear from Tanatswa who, along with Alex, took part in the TGS Japan tour during the September break, even bumping into a familiar face at the baseball in Tokyo:
Over the holidays, thirty students and four staff members embarked on an incredible journey to Japan for our Cultural and Technology Tour. It was an unforgettable experience that blended learning, adventure and cultural immersion.
We spent three days at Keio Shiki High School, where we were warmly welcomed by their students and staff. During our stay, we had the chance to learn Karate and Judo, watch traditional archery and even take part in a Japanese tea ceremony. The hospitality and enthusiasm of everyone at Keio Shiki were outstanding - beyond the school visit, we explored a variety of cultural and religious sites, gaining insight into Japan’s rich history and traditions. One of the highlights was the World Expo site, where we saw a striking silver building made from a material so new, it doesn’t even have a name yet - a glimpse into the future of design and innovation.
Of course, no trip to Japan would be complete without some fun. We spent a day at Universal Studios Japan, where we experienced some truly amazing rides, explored Super Nintendo World and discovered which staff member has a secret love for rollercoasters!
We also visited teamLab, an extraordinary blend of art and technology - an immersive digital art experience that left everyone in awe. Another memorable experience was attending a baseball game, where the atmosphere was electric. The crowd’s singing and energy when the home team smashed the favourites was something we’ll never forget.
And, of course, we couldn’t leave out two of Japan’s best features - the food and the shopping. From sushi and ramen to high-tech gadgets and unique souvenirs, there was something for everyone. It truly was an amazing trip - full of learning, laughter and lasting memories.
At the time of writing, Term 4 has entered its third week, and we have several students of note to recognise and celebrate. Mrs Bazley’s ‘Wall of Achievement,’ or ‘Pool Room,’ has very little space left. A sure sign of the efforts of our boys across the year!
On a House front, we congratulate Arch – named as the 2025 Boyce Boarding Senior of the Year. A worthy winner, who as well accomplishing a huge amount on the rugby field has been a gentle giant off it. I know that the younger boys, in particular, are going to miss Arch’s presence and willingness to have a chat. Secondly, Will M has been recognised for his commitment to marking house milestones with his camera and has been awarded a Head of House Commendation. This followed Rory’s presentation of his Double Honour Colours, deserved recognition for a continued commitment to house and service. The birthdays of Mitch (16), Christopher (17), Ben H (17) , Finn G (14), Josh (18) provided further reasons for cheer. Lastly, our Mountain Mile service event, in support of Winter Shelter, was an excellent morning, with the participants and supporters showing the best version of themselves throughout.
Academically, we are extremely well-represented within the recent diligence awards. Will M, Charlie, Lawson, Henry, Matt, Sam P, Hugh and Emmanuel all brought home a Pro Diligentia. With Christopher, Elijah and exchange student Thushaan all receiving Pro Summa Diligentia recognition for their work ethic. Our approach to our work ethic scores will be a major focus area during 2026, so it is particularly pleasing to see the high number of returning students who are already leading the way in this space. A further nod to Elijah, Geography, and Eric, Design and Technology, for their Commendations.
The Term 3 sports awards have also been announced. Congratulations to basketballers, Elijah – First V Most Valuable Player, Corben - 10A Most Valuable Player, and Emmanuel – Graham Copeland Award. Emmanuel, Elijah and Austin all received Full Colours in recognition of their involvement with this year’s First V squad. Turning to rugby, Myles was awarded Honour Colours, with Arch, Rhymen and Luke obtaining Full Colours. Tom H, Sam P and James marked their first season in the First XV squad with Half Colours. Henry’s 16As were celebrated as Team of the Year and individual awards were granted to:
Will H – U13Bs Best Forward
Will D - U14As Best Back and DJ Cornes Memorial Award for the Most Promising Player in All Grades
Lawson – U15Cs Best and Fairest
Hugo – U15Bs Best and Fairest
Nate – U16As Best and Fairest
George A – U16As Coaches Award
Myles – W.J Renwick Trophy First XV Best and Fairest
Merit Team of the Year – Nate, Hugo, Luke and Lawson
With the onset of cricket season, our club cricketers are back in action. Finn S has been going particularly well, marking his debut for Met. Easts with a century! Lastly for sport, we acknowledge Keynan, who has been selected as part of the Darling Downs Aquathon and Triathlon Team.
The bulk of assessment this term occurs during Week 6. Our focus, therefore, now shifts to what is a short run-in to the final academic demands of the year. For our Year 12s, externals are about to begin and we wish them the very best of luck.

Corfe House
Corfe Courier
Welcome Back
We hope all our boys and their families enjoyed a well-deserved break over the September/October holidays. The boys have returned in great spirits and there is a noticeably positive energy in the House. They are ready for what promises to be a busy and exciting final term of the year.
A Busy Term Ahead
With just 4 to 5 weeks of classes before assessments begin, this term will move quickly. Many boys are also involved in Term 1 GPS pre-season training, swimming sessions and preparations for GPS Track and Field events. It is a great time to stay focused, stay organised and make the most of every opportunity.
Enjoy the Sunshine
With warmer weather upon us, we encourage all boys to spend their afternoons outside, enjoying each other’s company and making the most of Corfe’s beautiful surroundings. Whether it is a game of touch, a swim in the pool, basketball in the courtyard, a hit in the cricket nets or simply relaxing together, these moments are what make boarding life so special.
Welcome Year 10 Service and Leadership Gentlemen
We are pleased to welcome our new Year 10 mentors:
Edward Beattie (Groom)
Adrian Gray (Stephens)
Jock Kirkby (Mackintosh)
Henry Ballinger (Boyce)
Jimmy Moloney (Taylor)
We look forward to their support and leadership throughout the term as they guide and encourage our boys.
Senior House Transition Begins
This term marks a significant milestone for our Year 7 boys as they begin their transition into the Senior Houses. On the first night back, during Prep, the boys reflected on their time in Corfe and shared what they are looking forward to next year. These responses were shared with the Year 10 mentors during a “get to know you” session in House Groups. It was fantastic to see the boys engaging so openly. By the end of the evening, all our new Year 10s knew the names of every Corfe boy in their House, a wonderful start to building strong connections. The Year 10 boys have already made a positive impact on Corfe life and we are excited to see this continue throughout the term.
To support a smooth transition into the Senior Houses, a number of activities are being organised, including:
Friday morning BBQs
Games of touch
House meetings
Meetings with key staff
Q&A sessions
“Meals with Mates” (Sitting at dinner with Senior Houses - starting Wednesday, Week 3)
As part of our commitment to fostering connections across year groups, two Year 11 boys from each Senior House will join Corfe each Friday morning for a BBQ breakfast. This initiative helps our Year 7 boys begin forming relationships with older students and strengthens the culture within our boarding community.
Lunchtime Grab ‘n’ Go Trial
Over the past two weeks, our Corfe boys have trialled a new lunchtime initiative with access to their own dedicated servery in the Dining Hall. This allows them to quickly grab their meals and choose to eat in the dining hall or head out to the library or oval.
It has been fantastic to see a noticeable increase in the number of boys eating lunch. The setup also means they no longer need to queue alongside older students, which can sometimes feel intimidating. With quicker access to meals, the boys have more time to relax, play and interact with day students, enhancing their overall social experience. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and we are excited to see how this initiative continues to support their wellbeing and engagement.
Semester Two Pro Diligentia Awards
Congratulations to the following boys for receiving a Pro Diligentia Award for Semester 2, recognising exceptional work ethic across all subjects:
Charlie Allen
Mal Bulmer
Cruze Castles
Foster Culbert
Charlie Groat

Corfe Graduation – Save the Date
As previously emailed, the Corfe Graduation Dinner will be held on Friday, 21 November. This year, we are excited to welcome parents to join us in celebrating a wonderful year. It will be a special evening to acknowledge the boys’ achievements as they have navigated their first year of senior school and life away from home.
Final Message to the Boys
This term is all about finishing strong. I have spoken with the boys about the following themes, which will be reinforced throughout the term:
Positive Relationships – showing kindness, respect and empathy
Academic Focus – maintaining consistent effort and seeking help when needed
Personal Responsibility – staying organised, managing belongings and keeping dorm spaces tidy
Contribution to House Life – getting involved, helping out and supporting each other
Resilience – keeping a positive mindset
Co-curricular Engagement – attending pre-season sessions and enjoying time outdoors
Respect for Staff and Systems – following rules and boundaries
Gratitude – appreciating opportunities and expressing thanks
We encourage all boys to build on what has been a fantastic year, continue showing leadership in the boarding house, stay committed to academic goals and always give their best in all areas of school life.
To Our Families
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns about your son’s wellbeing or progress. We are here to help and support you, and we value the partnership between home and school in ensuring each boy thrives.
With the end of the school year quickly approaching the finish line, it is only fitting to reflect on the year we have just had and for the Year 12s, their time in their respective boarding houses. After six years of boarding school, I can certainly say that boarding has shaped who I am today, and I have learnt a great deal during my time as a TGS boarder. From when I first walked through the school gates as a shy, homesick boy in Corfe to now, preparing for finishing school, I can acknowledge that the boarding experience at TGS has definitely developed myself into a more rounded individual and a better person ready for life after school. My advice for those currently still in boarding is to embrace every opportunity you can. The School provides lots of chances to get involved in all areas and everyone should strive to make the most of this. Also enjoy your time in the boarding house because it goes quickly.
It is safe to say this year in the Groom Boarding House has been an exceptional one. Being surrounded with my best mates has, personally, made for a truly enjoyable final year at TGS and a successful one for the house, recently announced as winners of the prized Headmaster’s Shield. This breaks a twenty-year drought for Groom to the delight of all those associated with the house. This year has been busy, with an array of activities such as academics, sport, service and other co-curricular activities. Many Groom boarders have seen success with academic prizes, the opportunity to compete in first teams and representative squads and in general enjoying their time at school. Another highlight for many Groom boarders was the ‘House of Origin’ victory over Stephens for the fourth consecutive year. Social house touch is a key part of the boarding school lifestyle and helps build connections within the boarding house. I’ve made some great memories in the boarding house this year as I’m sure many others have, and it has been a pleasure sharing it with all the other boys. A massive thanks also to Mr Paffey, Mr Nicholls, Mr Hall, Mrs Bazley and all the other staff members involved who ensure that our lives are made easy. They all do so much for the house and everyone’s enjoyment and success this year is a testament to their dedication.

Headmaster's Sheild: The Drought Is Broken
In a truly historic achievement, Groom House has claimed the prestigious Headmaster’s Shield for the first time in twenty years — a remarkable milestone in Toowoomba Grammar School’s 150th year.
This victory is not simply about points or accolades; it is the culmination of effort, grit and unwavering commitment shown by every Groom student throughout the year. From the classroom to the sporting field, from service to the arts, Groom boys have embodied perseverance and teamwork, supporting one another to achieve collective success.
This is a result of years of hard work, resilience and belief in what Groom stands for. The boys have shown that sustained effort and grit truly pay off.
Winning the Headmaster’s Shield marks more than a triumph — it symbolises a new chapter in Groom’s proud history. As the School celebrates 150 years, Groom’s achievement serves as a powerful reminder that success is built on persistence, purpose and pride.
Congratulations to every member of Groom House on this outstanding accomplishment — a legacy to inspire the next generation.
As the year draws to a close, we bid farewell to our Year 12 students, whose time at Toowoomba Grammar School is coming to an end. Over their years at TGS, these young men have grown in character, leadership and resilience — leaving a lasting mark on our community.
Their final term has been filled with reflection, celebration and gratitude as they look back on friendships forged, challenges overcome and memories made both in and beyond the classroom. Whether through academic success, sporting excellence, artistic creativity, or service to others, the Year 12s have led by example and upheld the values that define our School.

As you prepare to take your next steps beyond the gates of TGS, we thank you for your contribution and wish you every success for the future.
At the beginning of Term 4, the TGS Rugby community gathered to celebrate the award winners for 2025. Groom deservedly shared in the success with the following boys awarded for outstanding seasons on the rugby pitch:
Hamish B - 13C Best and Fairest
Luke S - 15C Best and Fairest
Lawson M - 15A Best and Fairest, Team of the Year
Campbell S - Third XV Best Forward, Team of the Year
Ed W - Second XV Best back
A central value in Groom Boarding is the notion of 'staying in the grind'. This idea values effort, and it is this effort that places boys in a position to take advantage when opportunity presents. Last week, Diligence awards were given recognising boys who embody continued effort. My congratulations to the following boys.

As you read this article, Week 3 of Term 4 will be complete. This Term is going by in a blur and your sons will soon be back at enjoying the Christmas Holiday break with you. Before they get back to driving tractors, riding horses and motorbikes and eating the contents of the fridge, they have their assessment to attend to. Please be aware that Week 6 is slated as Assessment Week. This means that we are currently at the half-way point of the current unit of work. When speaking with your sons, please encourage them to give their best effort toward their studies.
Groom has been fortunate enough to welcome Cody G and Pierce B into the House this term as new boarders. We hope that your time at TGS and Groom is enjoyable and rewarding.
At the end of last term, we proudly announced our new student leadership team. These young men have been selected not only for their leadership potential but for the values they consistently demonstrate, kindness, honesty and a hardworking ethic. They are role models within our boarding house and wider School community, and we look forward to the positive impact they will make. They have been appointed and agreed to take on the responsibility to serve, help and guide their peers and housemates in 2026.

Mackintosh House Formal Dinner – A Night to Remember
The Centenary Dining Hall at Toowoomba Grammar School was the elegant setting for the recent Mackintosh House Formal Dinner, a cherished tradition that brought together students, families and staff for an evening of celebration, reflection and heartfelt farewells. The evening was marked by thoughtful peer and mate's contributions, with speakers from each year level sharing thoughtful reflections and messages:
Year 8: Zac Hobday and Hezze Rossi
Year 9: Rhett Cornford and Kinsley L
Year 10: Jock Kirkby and James Schramm
Year 11: All Year 11 boys delivered personal and insightful speeches as they paid tribute to their mates and the Year 12 cohort.
A highlight of the evening was the toast to the Year 12 students, delivered by Old Boy Adam Cleeve, father of current Year 12 boarder Stafford Cleeve. His words resonated deeply with all in attendance, bridging generations and reinforcing the strength of the TGS community.
We were especially grateful to the 21 families who made the journey to attend the dinner, many bringing siblings and extended family members. Their presence added warmth and a sense of unity to the occasion. The evening was expertly hosted by Archie Smart and Artie McMillan, newly appointed Captains of Mackintosh Boarding House. Their confident and composed leadership as MCs set the tone for a smooth and engaging program.
The Mackintosh House Formal Dinner was more than just an event, it was a celebration of connection, leadership and the enduring mateship of our boarding community. We thank everyone who contributed to making it such a memorable night.
On Tuesday, 21 October, Mackintosh House marked a special milestone, the final evening with all Year 12 boarders together. This special occasion, a kind of "Last Supper," before the departures start, was filled with warmth, laughter and reflection.
The evening began with a surprise visit from Mrs Beazley, who returned a jacket belonging to Josh Smart. She stayed to chat with the boys, many of whom she had cared for as their house mother during their early days at Corfe. Her presence was a touching reminder of the journey these young men have taken.
Our current house mother also spent meaningful time with the boys during dinner, presenting each of them with a handwritten, personal card, a gesture that our boys appreciated, a special touch. Mr Stewart was responsible for the excellent red decorations that set the scene and added a sense of occasion to the night.
The boys enjoyed a feast of wings, burgers and cake, but the real joy came from the shared memories. They played How Well Do You Know Your Family, a card game that tested their knowledge of one another, and flipped through old yearbooks and school magazines, laughing at past antics and reflecting on how far they’ve come. It was a significant night, one that marked the end of an era. The boys understood the importance of this final gathering, recognising it as both a culmination of their time in Mackintosh House and the beginning of new journeys.
As our senior boys prepare to leave, the house inevitably changes, but their legacy remains. We wish our Year 12 students all the very best as they step into the next chapter of their lives.
Gilbert led the Year 12 Awards Assembly Procession
It feels like we are welcoming you all back one week and then waving you off for the long summer break the next. The final term of the year always tends to fly and this year, like all of the others, will be no different. The term of the ‘finals’ will see the exit of our Year 12 graduating students and, just last week, we held our final House Assembly. Each of the Year 12 graduating boarders were presented with a mug and a ‘special’ version was presented to the Head of House – Gilbert Tighe, and, to our Year 12 Boarder of the Year, Oliver Weier.
The Year 12 Boarder of the Year Award recognises a student who has, without fail, showed endeavour and positive spirit throughout his time at TGS and in the boarding house. Oliver is a young man who flies under the radar in many instances; however, he is a student who can be relied upon in every situation that he encounters. Oliver has maintained an impeccable behaviour record, never been placed in detention, never spoken out of turn or in a manner unbecoming of his own high standards. To this end, when consulting other staff, and boarding supervisors, in respect of the ‘ideal’ candidate – Oliver was the unanimous candidate and a worthy successor to the 2024 recipient, Lachy Finlay. The level of respect that we assume from our boys is epitomised in Oliver. He is polite, always well-presented and never needs reminding to complete a task or tidy his area. I think that this is a great award that commends the deserving for doing the right thing, without exception. Olver is a worthy recipient. Well done, Oli.
This last Tuesday saw the final evening in the House for the Year 12 boys and the occasion was marked by a House Meeting that gave the Year 12 boys the chance to speak to the House about their memories, key take away moments and anything else that sprang to mind. In the end, choked by the emotion of the occasion, most boys managed a brief ‘thanks, good on ya, all the best’ before retiring for the next boy to repeat the message. Mr Tranberg and I spoke about legacy. We emphasised that these boys have set a bar – never making life difficult for the House staff, never treating the boys in the younger year groups in any way other than respectfully, and they are – to their credit – respectful followers of rules. I have said, on many occasions, in this forum, that we are incredibly proud of the House values and how they carry through from year to year, and from year group to year group.
We finished by letting all the boys know that they are always welcome back to the House if, and when, they are passing through. We wish them well for all the end of term assessment and the traditional end-of-school milestones that are upcoming. I look forward to seeing all parents, and boys, at the School Formal towards the later part of November.
Exchange Arrivals
Chase and Josh being introduced to the House
With the return of Ed T and George T after their adventures in the UK and South Africa respectively, you may have been forgiven for thinking that our international connections were done and dusted for another year. Not a chance. We have been joined by Chase and Josh from our exchange partner school in South Africa, Kearsney College. As you well know, I am a huge fan of exchange programs and I am already heartened to see that a number of Year 9 boys have commenced with applications for the 2026 program – good luck to them. Their interest and enthusiasm can only be enhanced by the impression that Chase and Josh have made since their arrival. Their enthusiasm, interest and positivity is matched only by their politeness, respect and readiness to get involved. George T has confirmed that the high standards and values that are the norm at Kearsney are, in fairness, somewhat aspirational for us here at TGS. We have a way to go, and, it is through experiences such as school exchanges, we are able to identify and share practical ways that we can make a difference and raise standards.
New Leadership
With the departure and upcoming graduation of the Year 12 cohort, we have seen the Year 11 boys begin to step up and grasp the opportunities to lead.
Stephens Boarding HC 2026 taking the icy plunge
With Xavier De C, Henry M and Campbell N as the ‘Stephens Triumverate’ (Prefects and House Leaders) leading Friday barbecues, establishing a new HRC and keen to be active from the outset, the House in 2026 will be in safe hands; hands that are ready to innovate and be open to change. It is good to have new ideas and Campbell, from the outset, has put in place one – potentially – genius innovation. More on that later …. but it got my tick of approval! Every cohort is different and contains boys who will run at things differently. I am delighted that our 2026 Year 12 cohort want to investigate, if not instigate, change. They are motivated, enthusiastic and ready to be the boots on the ground. This is a key reason why the House remains in a great place and by being open to some renewal and change, we are sure to be in a place where the younger boys in the House are able to see that continuity - the preferred state - and change are able to co-exist alongside of each other.
Xavier, Henry and Campbell have kindly, agreed to write a short introduction – presenting themselves to the BT community, and, sharing some of their key ideas for the year ahead..
Hello, my name is Xavier De Ceuster
I’m from Vanuatu and I have been at TGS since Year 8. Since then, I have seen many Year 12s leave and have learn a great deal from them. I want to go to university after school and study a medicinal course and therefore will strive to achieve the best in both my academics and sporting endeavours.
As Stephens House Captain, and as a Year 12, I want to contribute and aspire to creating a strong connection between younger and older grades. I want to make sure that everyone in Stephens plays an integral and vital part of the house community. I want everyone to feel welcome in Stephens.
To do this, we as seniors and leaders of the house in 2026, will reinstate weekly house touch games to support inclusiveness and make a support network for those in the younger grades to get help whenever they need.
Sincerely Xav
Hello, my name is Henry Maunder
I’m from Moree, New South Wales off a cereal cropping farm. I started my time at Grammar in Year 8, and since then I have involved myself in a wide range of sport which I have loved and something that I would recommend to any boy in the school and valued my academics. After next year, I am looking to go head down the range and study at UQ, most likely something in the realm of Commerce or Business. Whilst also hopefully getting into a college.
As Stephens Vice-Captain, I really want to try and create stronger bonds between the younger and older year levels in the house.
I often reflect on my interactions with those older boys when I was younger, and they still resonate with me today. To do this, I believe that as seniors we must stand up and actively try to engage in these simple but often meaningful conversations. By doing basic things like waking them up in the morning and putting them to bed at night I feel like we can leave a very positive legacy on Stephens.
Best wishes Henry
Hi, my name is Campbell Newell and I've been a boarder since Year 7. I'm from Augathella from a cattle property.
I have enjoyed playing cricket, tennis and rugby throughout my time at Grammar as well as applying myself to my academics and music. Eventually, I would like to end up down at UQ studying Business or Economics where I would hopefully stay in College.
Next year I want to get to know the younger boys better and be able to help them out with any academics, along with introducing more house activities like BBQ's and the house jumper.
Also I believe it would nice for Stephens to aim to win the Headmasters Shield, after coming secondthis year. In my time at Grammar we have only ever come fourth or fifth until this year and as a House we should be able to do something next year with this bit of momentum leading into it.
Cheers Campbell
Headmaster's Shield
Year 12 2026 celebrating Xavier's birthday
In 'breaking news' (as they love to feature on the TV these days) - it has been announced that Stephens House has secured second place in the Headmaster's Shield for the 2025 school year. Competed for by all senior houses in a number of areas - Carnival Day, Swimming, Cross Country, Athletics and House Touch the much-heralded prize is keenly contested.
Stephens House has traditionally finished at the bottom of the pile and it would be fair to say that one could generally reach high enough to put the Stephens board in the right place on the Merit Ladder in the Assembly Hall without a step ladder. Not so this year, Stephens secured second place - behind our downstairs and downtrodden neighbours. This was a great honour and something that resulted from commitment, effort, and, quite simply, turning up for your mates when it was cooler not to. Well done to all boys who secured points through showing up and having a go. Mr Sullivan's hard work in the day house certainly had a huge impact and went a long way to getting us over the line as a House. Congrats to him, and to all boys.
Welcome back to Term 4! It’s wonderful to see all our boys return with renewed vigour and enthusiasm as we head into the final stretch of the school year. The term is well underway, and with assessment week fast approaching in Week 6, I encourage you to continue supporting your sons as they prepare for their final exams and assessments for 2025.
I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate Sarah Acton, Mother of Will (Year 7) and Thomas (Year 9) who will be taking the reigns as Taylor House Parent from Mellissa Hoare. Thank you Mellissa for your dedication and support of me and all our Taylor House boarding parents and boys.
Taylor House Formal Dinner
It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the outstanding Taylor House Formal Dinner that concluded Term 3. It was a wonderful evening of celebration — a chance to recognise the achievements of our Year 12s, welcome our Corfe brothers and formally hand over the reins to our new student leaders. The atmosphere was a perfect blend of pride, laughter and genuine camaraderie — a true reflection of Taylor House spirit.
Pro Diligentia Awards
Congratulations to our Pro Diligentia recipients Rupeni Baravilala, Fletch Worland, Ryan Allan, Harry Rogers, Thomas Acton and Sid Moloney, for their exemplary commitment to academics and their embodiment of the Taylor standards: Do Your Best in Every Endeavour.
Farewell to Our Year 12s
Our Year 12 boys are in the final days of their schooling journey, and excitement levels are understandably high! We recently gathered for our traditional Final Dinner — a time of reflection, laughter and a few well-guarded stories (the details of which, of course, remain confidential). Suffice to say, the evening stayed within acceptable bounds of mischief! I am incredibly proud of this cohort — they’ve led with maturity, humour and integrity, and we look forward to celebrating their final milestones in the coming weeks.
Welcoming Our Corfe Brothers
It’s been fantastic to spend more time with our Year 7 Corfies as they begin their transition into Taylor House. Our BBQ breakfasts have been a great way to connect and share stories, and it’s fair to say the boys are itching to move into the “Big House.” More transition events are planned as we continue to build those important relationships.
Hike 4 Homeless
Last weekend, Taylor House proudly supported the annual Hike 4 Homeless event. It was inspiring to see 50 boys and staff take part in support of such an important cause. The trail this year presented its fair share of challenges, but the boys handled it brilliantly — even the heat didn’t slow them down. A special mention to Will McDowall and James Armstrong for completing the 10 km run, and to James Petersen for his impressive 20 km effort. Well done, gents — an excellent example of service and perseverance.
Upcoming Events
Please keep an eye on Mr Byron’s weekly emails for weekend activities — including the ever-popular Movie World and Wet’n’Wild trips (be sure to book quickly to secure a spot). And finally, a reminder that Speech Night concludes our term, with attendance required for all boys — a fitting way to celebrate another successful year.
Thank you for your ongoing support of Taylor House. Let’s make this final term a memorable one.
